Cabbage Patch Dreams and Swimming Lessons

There are some toys that disappear into history, and then there are toys that quietly refuse to leave.

If you grew up in the 1980s, you probably remember the Cabbage Patch Kid craze. Stores were packed, tempers flared, and parents searched high and low hoping to find that one special doll before Christmas morning.

I remember it well.

My little sister, Catherine, wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid more than anything. My parents turned that Christmas into a full-scale mission. Every toy aisle became another stop. Every phone call to another department store carried a little more hope.

Somehow, they pulled it off.

On Christmas morning, Santa had delivered exactly what Catherine wanted. To a little girl, it wasn't just a doll. It was magic.

Like many people, I assumed Cabbage Patch Kids would eventually become another forgotten fad. Kids would grow up, the dolls would end up in closets, and the world would move on.

Then I became an eBay and Poshmark reseller.

To my surprise, those same dolls are now highly collectible. Some limited editions sell for impressive prices, and devoted collectors still search for them every day. What looked like yesterday's fad became today's treasure.

That reminded me of another lesson.

Teaching a young child to swim often feels the same way.

The first day is filled with fear. The water seems too deep. Parents wonder if the lessons are worth it. Children cling tightly to the side of the pool.

But something changes.

One day they let go.

A few weeks later they're floating.

Soon they're laughing, splashing, and asking to jump into the deep end.

Years later, that child may not remember every swimming lesson, but they'll carry the confidence for the rest of their life.

Some investments aren't measured by how exciting they seem today.

A Cabbage Patch Kid became a lifelong Christmas memory.

Swimming lessons become a lifelong skill.

Sometimes what looks like a passing moment becomes something far more valuable than anyone expected.

The best gifts aren't always the ones with the highest price tag.

They're the ones that stay with us long after the wrapping paper is gone. ✌️
